Lakers superstar LeBron James expressed his condolences to the family of American journalist Grant Wahl, who died during the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match from soccer archive between the Netherlands and Argentina (2:2, 3:4 on penalties).


While working for Sports Illustrated in 2002, Wahl wrote about James, who was then a high school student in Akron, Ohio. The journalist wrote an article about LeBron with the title The Chosen One, which introduced the 17-year-old player to the world for the first time.


First of all, my condolences to his family.


I`m a big fan of Grant, and the article he wrote about me when I was a teenager was really cool. It was always a pleasure to communicate with him. He spent a lot of time in my hometown of Akron while writing that article.


I always watched him from afar. Even when I had a career and became a professional, and he moved on to another sport, every time his name came up, I remembered me and Grant at our school, St. Vincent St. Mary.


This is a tragic loss. It`s a shame to lose such a wonderful man and I wish his family all the best. And may he rest in heaven, " LeBron said.
