Mercedes driver George Russell spoke about the chances at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.


Russell won the sprint, passing Red Bull`s Max Verstappen, who used medium tires, unlike the main rivals.


It certainly feels good to be the first to cross the finish line. And overtaking Max was not as easy as we would like. He had nothing to lose, so he defended quite aggressively. But it`s great that the team is making progress.


I am very proud of the work of each employee. For us, this is a huge incentive, no matter how the race develops, - said the Briton after the finish.


Russell spoke about how Verstappen kept the extra soft at the Grand Prix, although he suffered on the medium in the sprint:


This software held them back today, and tomorrow it will play in their favor. Without a doubt, these were the best tires, and it`s a little strange that the difference was so big. I don`t think anyone expected this. We chose between software and medium, the situation was 50/50.


You have to think about how to act in the race, because at some point you will have to use a medium. And it doesn`t look like the experience will be pleasant.


Finally, George shared his opinion on the progress of Mercedes:


We are moving forward, it is obvious. And the competitiveness of the team is surprising. We brought a significant update to Austin, but we didn`t expect how well it would work - of course, we like it.


Yes, Max didn`t have his usual day, and in practice his speed was very high, so I expect Max and Red Bull are still the favourites.
